A.S.M.O. Electronics Workshop at South Hill Park DMC

Electronic Instruments for gestural performance
South Hill Park Digital Media Centre, Bracknell
11th & 12th June 2011

Stu Smith (A.S.M.O.) will be returning to Bracknell again in June for another 2 day electronics workshop.
Participants will build an electronic sound / noise instrument designed for gestural performance, utilising very simple oscillators, filters, modulation and feedback.

By taking a modular approach to electronics, quite complex instruments can be made by combing several very simple circuits. Using touch controls, tilt switches, light and temperature sensors the performer becomes an integral part of the instrument, tone, pitch and rhythm are controlled by body resistance and movement.
Participants will learn how to assemble circuits from readily available standard components and how they can be adapted to enhance circuit bent devices.

No previous electronics experience is necessary although good eye sight and a steady hand is recommended

Dirty Electronics at the ICA : A.S.M.O. remixes

Institute of Contemporary Arts, London
16 – 17, 19 – 20 Feb 2011
Free

The composer and instrument maker John Richards takes up temporary residence in the gallery with Solder and Score – a unique participation opportunity for visitors to the ICA. Over the course of five days workshop attendees will build a large patchwork quilt-like instrument and co-write a musical score with John culminating in a group performance and auction.
Bathysphere’s resident solder maestro A.S.M.O. will be “hardware remixing” John’s instrument during the event.

max/msp/jitter for Visual Artists Workshop

Max/MSP/Jitter is an extremely powerful and flexible toolkit for visual artists – but it can often seem daunting to get to grips with. In this course Sean Clark will be showing how Max/MSP/Jitter can be used to create customised video mixing and playback systems, how it can be used to control lighting and how it work with sensors an actuators. The course is intended for those who are fairly new to Max/MSP (and certainly Jitter), but it is suggested that you try to familiar yourselves with some of the basic concepts behind the software before the course starts. Attendees should bring a laptop (Mac or PC) with the latest Max/MSP and Jitter software installed on it (the free one month trial will be sufficient). There will be a short amount of time at the beginning of course to make sure that all student laptops are configured correctly. The lastest Max/MSP Jitter software can be downloaded from www.cycling74.com. During the course we will focus on Max/MSP/Jitter basics, followed by the creation of a simple video mixer, the processing of live video, then using MIDI controllers and DMX lighting and finally using the Arduino micro-controller. Whilst this *will* be a technical day, the ultimate goal of the training is to show artists how they can use the Max/MSP/Jitter to create interactive and responsive visual artworks. Sean Clark will be demonstrating examples of such work from his own practice and there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion about the creative aspects of working with interactive media.

Bend it like A.S.M.O.

Bathysphere’s resident hackmeister ASMO is down at South Hill Park Digital Media Centre, Bracknell this weekend running a circuit bending workshop. Participants will be building Dub Sirens from Vtech toy phones which will then be wired together and patched into a specially built sequencer and the Bathysphere modular synth resulting in a crazy circuit bent brain. ASMO will be documenting and blogging throughout the weekend, check his blog for latest updates.
